Hobart Hurricanes have faced a major setback ahead of the Big Bash League finals as captain Nathan Ellis has been ruled out for the rest of the season due to a hamstring injury. This injury is seen as a major concern as Hurricanes are looking to defend their title.
“Hobart Hurricanes can confirm that skipper Nathan Ellis will miss the remainder of the BBL season and the BBL15 finals due to hamstring tightness,” said the franchise via a media release.
The club further added, “Ellis, who missed the Knockout on Wednesday night, was aiming to return for the final two matches of the BBL finals but was unfortunately unable to overcome the injury.”
Ellis had already missed the Knockout match against Melbourne Stars, which Hurricanes won only by three runs on January 21. He sustained this injury during a match against Brisbane Heat on January 14 but he travelled to Sydney with hopes of recovering in time. Sadly, he could not recover from the injury and was withdrawn from the squad just hours before the Challenger match. Batter Charlie Wakim was named as his replacement and Ben McDermott will be leading the squad in the absence of Ellis.
Ellis is currently the highest wicket-taker (14 scalps) for the franchise which makes his unavailability even more concerning for the side.
Ellis will also be resting during Australia’s upcoming T20I series against Pakistan, for managing his fitness before the T20 World Cup. Hurricane is set to face Sydney Sixers at the SCG on Friday January 23. The winner of this match will be playing the final against Perth Scorchers in Perth.
