
Steve Smith played a stunning knock which took Sydney Sixers into the final of the Big Bash League 2025/26 after a dominant 57-run win over Hobart Hurricanes at the SCG on January 23.
Batting first, Sydney Sixers posted a strong total of 198 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 20 overs. Smith was the top run scorer for the team as he smashed 65 runs off 43 balls. His knock included 9 boundaries and one maximum at the strike rate of 151.16. Daniel Hughes (13) and Josh Philippe (15) provided quick starts, meanwhile, captain, Moises Henriques added 19 runs in the middle. Joel Davies (27) Lachlan Shaw (21) and Jack Edward (15) also added crucial runs in the end.
For Hurricanes, Riley Meredith was the pick of the bowlers as he took three crucial wickets which restricted Sixers to some extent. Billy Stanlake and Rishad Hossain were also impressive as they both picked two wickets each.
While chasing, Hurricanes had a decent start as the openers, Mitchell Owen and Tim Ward, added 13 runs each. Beau Webster also added 24 runs. Meanwhile, captain, Ben McDermott played a crucial 40-run knock off 26 balls, he was the highest run scorer of the team. Will Prestwidge (19) and Rishad Hossain (11) tried to fight back after the middle-order collapse but couldn’t make much of a difference as Hurricanes lost all of their wickets in just 17.2 overs and reached a total of 141 runs.
Sixers were impressive with the ball, and Ben Dwarshuis was the key bowler who picked three crucial wickets in just three overs. Mitchell Starc, Sean Abbot and Joel Davies picked two wickets each. Jack Edward also chipped in with one wicket.
Sixers will now meet Perth Scorchers in the BBL 2025/26 final on January 25 at Perth.
