The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced a cash prize of Rs 51 crore for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian team, who won their first World Cup title on Sunday by defeating South Africa by 52 runs at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed the development and said that the amount would be divided among the players, support staff, and selectors.

“Definitely, we have to thank Jay Shah, who is the Chair of the ICC, because just one month prior to this tournament, they increased the prize money for the ICC Women’s World Cup by about 300 per cent,” he said. “That is for the teams to receive, but after such a wonderful performance today at the DY Patil Stadium, where they defeated South Africa to win the championship, the BCCI is elated. Without touching anything from the ICC’s kitty, the BCCI, on its own, will pay a reward of Rs 51 crore to the Indian team. That amount will go to the players, the selectors, as well as the support staff headed by Amol Muzumdar.”

This amount is significantly higher than the prize money announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for the winners before the start of the tournament. The victorious Indian team are expected to receive USD 4.48 million, which is approximately Rs 39.78 crore, from the ICC.
