The BCCI have shown the way. Will the ICC follow suit?

The BCCI have amended playing conditions, allowing “serious injury replacements” for multi-day tournaments like Duleep Trophy and Ranji Trophy. They have sent detailed documents about the playing conditions to state associations, but this being an extended weekend with offices closed, some state bodies aren’t yet aware of it.

If a player sustains a serious injury during the course of a match, an injury replacement might be permitted. This is as per the amended playing conditions, and is historic. This had been introduced in the wake of Rishabh Pant’s foot injury during the fourth Test between England and India at Old Trafford last month, that had rendered him hors de combat. In the final Test at The Oval, Chris Woakes suffered a shoulder injury mid-game and had to come out to bat in the second innings with his arm in a sling.

Opinions, however, are divided on injury replacements in international cricket. India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is in favour of it, while England’s Test captain Ben Stokes has rejected the idea.
