The BCCI has relieved Abhishek Nayar from his position as the Indian team’s assistant coach, it is learnt. Nayar, who came to the Team India fold in July last year, has become the first casualty, as the BCCI carried out a review meeting following India’s 3-1 Test series loss in Australia. Before that, Rohit Sharma & Co had suffered a 3-0 home series whitewash against New Zealand.
After the Australia tour, Sitanshu Kotak was included in the Indian team’s coaching set-up as the batting coach. That served as an indication for a rejig. Fielding coach T Dilip and trainer Soham Desai, too, have been relieved of their duties. The Board is set to appoint Adrian Le Roux as the new physical trainer. The South African had earlier served the Indian team in that capacity when John Wright was the head coach.
Abhishek Nayar was handpicked by the current Indian team head coach, Gautam Gambhir
Nayar was handpicked by the current Indian team head coach Gautam Gambhir. The two worked together at Kolkata Knight Riders during the side’s title-winning campaign in the IPL in 2024. Nayar has also worked in a one-on-one capacity with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer, Dinesh Karthik and Venkatesh Iyer.
RevSportz has reached out to Nayar and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. Responses are awaited.
