The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has strongly condemned Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chairman Mohsin Naqvi for taking the Asia Cup trophy from the dais after India declined to receive it from him.
In a thrilling encounter, India edged past Pakistan to win their ninth Asia Cup title. Following the match, the post-match rituals began; however, there was a long delay before the presentation ceremony commenced. When it finally began, the winning team was not handed the trophy, as they had refused to accept it from Mr Naqvi, who is also a minister in the Pakistani government.
“We decided not to accept the trophy from the ACC chairman (Naqvi), who happens to be one of the key leaders in Pakistan. But that does not mean the gentleman should take the trophy away,” Saikia told ANI.
Saikia promised strong action by the BCCI against the ACC chairman for what he described as an unsporting act.
“We arrived with the medals, so it is very unfortunate, very unsporting, and we hope the trophy and medals will be returned to India as soon as possible. At the next ICC conference in Dubai, scheduled for the first week of November, we intend to lodge a very serious and strong protest against the actions of the ACC chairperson.”
The Indian team celebrated their victory with full spirit, even without the trophy. Captain Suryakumar Yadav reenacted Rohit Sharma’s iconic T20 World Cup celebration — only this time, without the silverware.
