The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has scheduled a significant Special General Meeting (SGM) to take place in Ahmedabad on May 27. In preparation for the meeting, BCCI secretary Jay Shah’s office has circulated a notice outlining the five-point agenda to be discussed. Among the key priorities are the formation of an internal working group for the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, to be hosted in India, and the establishment of a Women’s Premier League committee following the success of the inaugural edition.
Additionally, the SGM will focus on the ratification of the prevention of sexual harassment policy, the appointment of physios and trainers for state teams, and the formation of an infrastructure development and subsidy committee. The Working Group for the ODI World Cup will consist of the BCCI president, secretary, treasurer, acting CEO, and other senior officials, aiming to ensure smooth organization and upgrade of the infrastructure of the selected stadiums for the tournament.

Furthermore, the BCCI aims to standardize the support staff for domestic teams by appointing NCA-certified physios and trainers, fostering a uniform fitness module and injury management program. The establishment of a dedicated committee for the planning and development of the Women’s Premier League, as well as an Infrastructure Development and subsidy committee, will also be discussed during the SGM. The appointment of physios and strength and conditioning coaches for state teams will be deliberated upon, emphasizing the importance of well-rounded support for players.

Of the 5 agenda items, the most important is clearly the issue of how to deal with sexual harassment. Most Indian sports federations have been found lacking in this regard as the wrestling controversy has shown time and again. The BCCI will want to ensure that for an organisation as high profile, every structural reform is in place. The SGM presents an opportunity for the BCCI to address the issue and be ready for future challenges.
