Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has given the green signal for the construction of INR 1,650 crore mega-sports complex in Surya City, Bommasandra. It will also have eight indoor and eight outdoor sports arenas, gyms and training facilities, large swimming pool, hotels and a hall for international events.
Once constructed, the 80000-seater stadium will be the second-largest cricket ground in India after the the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Karnataka Housing Board will self-fund the project.
The plans to go-ahead with a new stadium in Bengaluru comes in the backdrop of the stampede that occured outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during RCB’s victory parade, resulting in loss of 11 lives and several getting injured. The resultant outcome of the stampede was that the T20 Maharaja Trophy was shifted over to Mysuru. As of now, the concerned authorities haven’t given the permission for the hosting of three league games and a semifinal of the 2025 Women’s Worls Cup.
Since the tragedy, the 32,000-seater ground has also come under scurinty, with Justice John Michael Cunha Commission deeming it as unfit to host events of significance.
Incidentally, the new ground in Bommasandra will be constructerd on a 100-acre land compared to just 17 acres for the Chinnaswamy. There is a belief that with efficient planning, the Surya City location could help in preventing the over-crowding issues that one witnessed at the Chinnaswamy.
