Bhuvneshwar Kumar has defended Jasprit Bumrah over the workload management issue. In the podcast Talk with Manvendra, Bhuvneshwar spoke about Bumrah’s career, his bowling action, and how that can affect his body.
“Considering how many years Jasprit Bumrah has been playing and competing in all formats, it is tough for anyone to sustain that. And with the kind of bowling action Bumrah has, injuries can happen to him or to anyone,” said Bumrah’s former India teammate.
Bhuvneshwar feels even if a player takes part in fewer games, it’s fine as long as they can make a big impact.
“I had no problem with him playing three out of five matches. If the selectors know what he can offer and are okay with it, it’s because they know he can still make a big impact in those three games,” said Bhuvneshwar, who play for Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
When Bumrah was rested for two Test matches in England, there were criticisms from experts. He took 14 wickets from three matches, including two fifers, and was the fourth-highest wicket-taker of the series.
Bhuvneshwar believes when a player is consistently given responsibilities in tough situations, they face both physical and mental pressure. And in such cases, those players should be given adequate rest to prolong their careers.
“People don’t always understand how tough it is to keep playing for so many years across formats. Bumrah is always bowling in tough situations, which brings both mental and physical pressure. If you want a player to have a long career, you have to manage them.”
India’s next big assignment is the Asia Cup, scheduled for September, and fans will be eager to see Bumrah in action again.
