Breaking news: FIFA cautions AIFF – expresses acute disappointment and puts India on notice

In a serous development, FIFA has literally put the AIFF on notice. In a letter addressed to President Kalyan Chaubey dated 25 August 2025, FIFA has expressed acute disappointment with what is going on in Indian football. It has outlined a series of steps the AIFF need to take urgently to avoid possible suspension. The deadline set is October 30, 2025.

In what could be seen as a defining paragraph, FIFA has written, “In this context, we kindly remind the AIFF of its obligation to manage its affairs independently and without any undue third-party influence, including government bodies, as enshrined in article 14 paragraph 1 (i) and article 19 paragraph 1 of the FIFA Statutes, as well as article 15 paragraph 4 of the AFC Statutes. Failure to adhere to this obligation may result in sanctions outlined in the FIFA and AFC Statutes, including the possibility of suspension. Furthermore, a member association may face consequences for third-party influence, even if it is not directly at fault (cf. article 14 paragraph 3 of the FIFA Statutes and article 10 paragraph 1 (t) and 2 of the AFC Statutes). A suspension of the AIFF would result in the loss of all of its rights as a FIFA and AFC member, as defined in the FIFA and AFC Statutes.”

This paragraph is particularly significant in the light of the Supreme Court hearing on August 28, 2025. What constitutes third-party influence? What can be seen as interference from government bodies? What violates the FIFA statutes? It will be interesting to see how the Amicus on the case reacts to the letter, which FIFA has categorically mentioned should be placed before the apex court.

While it has asked for the constitution to be ratified and finalised for October 30, it has also expressed frustration at players losing out due to the ongoing ISL impasse.

Clearly, Indian Football is at a crossroads, and in the meeting between FSDL and AIFF this afternoon finding a solution, which is compliant with FIFA regulations and the Sports Act is a dire need.
