With reports doing the rounds that the IPL playoff and final is to move from Kolkata, the Cricket Association of Bengal has done something novel and unheard of. The Association approached the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata asking for a report on the weather pattern expected in Kolkata on 3 June. The report from the Met office, which has been submitted to the BCCI, clearly states that it is too early to make such a prediction and it is only around the 25th of May that such a forecast can be made.
Not stopping here, the CAB, sources suggest, reached out to the Indian Meteorological department in Delhi. They too provided a similar response and in fact referred the case to the Regional Met Office back in Kolkata. All of these reports have now been submitted to the BCCI.
Based on these developments, CAB sources believe that moving the IPL games away from Kolkata based on weather predictions is not really fair. They are hoping the BCCI will see the reports submitted and take a reasoned call.
With the venues not made public, CAB has not given up hope. “We remain confident that things will work out because we have done a very good job in organising everything. Also, you can’t predict weather patterns so early and we have submitted all official documents to this effect.”
Now it remains to be seen what the BCCI decides. If CAB does lose on hosting these games, chances are it will be compensated by getting key games, a semi final or even the final, in the world T20 in February March 2026.
