Australian all-rounder Cameron Green is preparing for a potential shift in responsibility as he eyes the No. 3 batting spot in the upcoming ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa, set to begin on 11 June at Lord’s.

Green, who underwent back surgery last October and missed Australia’s home summer, is now poised to return to the national side. Although head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed his inclusion in the playing XI, he has yet to reveal Green’s exact position in the order.

Speculation suggests Green may be promoted to the No. 3 slot—an unfamiliar position in his First-Class career. Despite limited experience there, Green remains unbothered.

“I’ve batted at three for most of my life, so I’m completely comfortable with the idea,” Green said.

As he makes his comeback, Green will feature primarily as a specialist batter in the WTC final. His return to competitive cricket began with a county stint for Gloucestershire in April, marking his first appearance since September 2024.

Green highlights the importance of Bumrah’s Message

Notably, ahead of his surgery, Green received a message of encouragement from Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has also endured a similar injury setback.

“Bumrah was playing a Test in India at the time, yet still reached out the night before my surgery,” Green revealed. “Small gestures like that mean a lot. Watching his return to form post-surgery really boosted my confidence.”

Green made the most of his county opportunity, registering three centuries in five matches. He scored 112 in his comeback innings against Kent and followed that with 128, an unbeaten 67, 118 not out, and 25 in his final two games—despite a brief slump with four single-digit scores.

More than just the runs, Australia will be pleased to see Green getting valuable match time under his belt ahead of a high-stakes clash at Lord’s.
