Australia all-rounder Cameron Green has confirmed that he will return to bowling in this year’s Sheffield Shield season, in the build-up to the Ashes 2025–26.
In October last year, Green opted for back surgery and has not bowled in professional cricket since. He missed the home summer, was ruled out of the Champions Trophy, and also withdrew from IPL 2025. The 26-year-old cricketer turned out for Gloucestershire and scored three centuries in the lead-up to the World Test Championship final at Lord’s, which South Africa won.
“In the past, it’s worked really well when I focused on Shield cricket,” said Green, who has taken 77 first-class wickets, ahead of the second ODI against South Africa in Mackay. “So I think that potentially might be the way to go, especially as I work my way back into bowling. Getting a few more overs in across a few more days might be the best way to approach it. I’m not quite certain which match I’ll return to bowling in, but I’m feeling really good — in a really good spot. It’s exciting to be back bowling at a reasonable intensity. It’s been a long road back.”
While Green remains Australia’s number one all-rounder, his batting position is still uncertain after a tough run of form since being promoted to number three in the WTC final and the subsequent three-Test series against the West Indies.
With the Ashes still months away, Green has ample time to regain his rhythm with the ball. A stint with his domestic side, Western Australia, in the Sheffield Shield, starting in October, is set to bolster his preparations for the home summer.
