Yuzvendra Chahal recently opened up about one of the most emotional moments in his cricketing career — the heartbreaking loss in the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Speaking on the podcast Figuring Out With Raj Shamani, the Indian spinner said he saw almost every player, including star batter Virat Kohli, crying after the defeat.
India fell short by 18 runs during the rain-threatened semi-final on the reserve day, as they failed to chase New Zealand’s 240-run target. The memory still haunts Chahal, especially because of what he witnessed inside the dressing room.
“I Saw Him Crying in the Bathroom”: Chahal on Kohli’s tears
When asked if he had ever seen Kohli cry, Chahal said, “2019 World Cup, I saw him crying in the bathroom.” He added, “And then I was the last batter, when I was crossing him, he had tears in his eyes. In 2019, I saw everyone crying in the bathroom.”
Chahal also spoke about his regret over his own performance in that crucial match. “It was Mahi bhai’s last match. I could have done better. I still regret that … I gave my best but it was the semi-final, a bigger stage and you have to give your 10-15% extra,” he said.
He also shared what it was like playing under both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. “I love how Rohit bhaiya carries himself on the ground. He’s a very good captain. With Virat bhaiya, it’s the energy he brings, the same energy every day. It will only go up and never down. Same energy. Every day,” Chahal said.
