Sri Lanka captain Chamari Athapaththu believes her team’s strong grasp of subcontinent conditions will give them a ‘secret advantage’ at the upcoming ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, which is set to be hosted in India and Sri Lanka.
The last time the 50-over World Cup was played in the subcontinent, Sri Lanka Women finished in fifth place – their highest-ever position at a World Cup. Five of their seven World Cup matches this year are scheduled to be played in Colombo, with the other two matches taking place in Guwahati and Navi Mumbai. Well-versed in the conditions, Athapaththu is confident of performing well and raising the team’s standards to a new level.
“The subcontinent conditions are something we are used to, and I feel that will give us a secret advantage. Combined with the experience of our senior players, we have a strong balance of youth and maturity, and this year’s World Cup is a real chance for us to shine. This tournament is also an opportunity for us to raise our standards to a new level,” Athapaththu told the ICC.
The Sri Lankan skipper is hopeful that fans will turn out in large numbers to support the team during the matches played in Colombo.
“We are excited to be playing some matches in front of our own fans. It’s a huge advantage and a great opportunity for us,” she said. “Sri Lankan cricket has come a long way since the 1990s, and we have taken part in several World Cups since.”
The Chamari Athapaththu-led Sri Lanka team will kick off their campaign against co-hosts India in Guwahati on September 30.
