Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu has been fined 10 per cent of her match fee for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during during the Women’s Tri-series match against South Africa in Colombo on Friday.

The incident occurred in the final group match of the tri-nation tournament held in Colombo, where South Africa defeated Sri Lanka in a high-scoring contest. During the 32nd over of South Africa’s innings, Athapaththu reacted in frustration after conceding a boundary to Annerie Dercksen. She removed her sunglasses and threw them to the ground, causing them to shatter.

This act was deemed a breach of Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which deals with the misuse of cricket equipment, clothing, or ground fixtures during an international game. As a result, Athapaththu was also handed one demerit point—her first in the past 24 months.

The charge was brought forward by on-field umpires Anna Harris and Dedunu de Silva, third umpire Lyndon Hannibal, and fourth umpire Nimali Perera. A formal hearing was not required as Athapaththu accepted the penalty proposed by match referee Michelle Pereira from the Emirates ICC International Panel.

Athapaththu had led Sri Lanka to the final of the series, where they fell short against India, who were powered by Smriti Mandhana’s century and Sneh Rana’s four-wicket haul. In that game, the Sri Lankan skipper fought like a lone warrior, smashing her 19th ODI fifty. Even that innings couldn’t help her team win.
