Charlie Dean is enjoying her new role as England’s vice-captain. She said that the experienced heads in the squad have made her job easier.

In particular, Dean showered praises on Nat Sciver-Brunt, the skipper. “You watch her bat and she’s someone that really puts her hand up and plays those big innings for the team,”she told the media. The spinner, who took two wickets in England’s opening game of the 2025 World Cup, also mentioned that Sciver-Brunt’s focus and attitude inspires everyone. “And from the way that she behaves, that filters down.”

She also praised coach Charlotte Edwards for her clarity of thought. “(Edwards) reads the game really well, and it seems really simple when she talks it through. We all know that cricket can be quite complicated. So, I guess breaking things down, keeping it really simple, and going into specifics has really helped us as a group,” she said.

Dean, who is just 24 years old, was named the England vice-captain for the ongoing World Cup. So, how does she look at being a part of the leadership group? “I’m really honoured to be vice-captain for this tournament. I guess being a bit of a sounding board for Nat, trying to make sure that she has everything she needs… I’m probably someone who’s not going to come forward with 10 million different ideas, but I guess thinking about the game and having a bit of a cricket brain.”

Dean also commended her fellow teammate Linsey Smith and called her journey “incredible”. The left-arm spinner took three wickets for just seven runs versus South Africa. She further pointed out that Smith’s hard work and determination have made her “someone that you want in your team”.

The England team is full of confidence as they gear up to face Bangladesh after a big win over South Africa, on October 3,  in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
