Chennai Hosts Landmark 23rd National Para Athletics Championship with Record Participation

This year’s edition has set a new benchmark with an unprecedented 1,476 para-athletes competing across 155 events, representing 30 teams. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), led by President Devendra Jhajharia, is overseeing the event alongside the Tamil Nadu Paralympic Sports Association (TNPSA), headed by Chandrasekar Rajan. Senior officials Satya Prakash Sangwan and Jayawant Gundu Hamanawar have also played crucial roles in ensuring smooth operations.

PCI President Devendra Jhajharia highlighted the significance of the event, stating, *”This championship is a milestone for para-athletics in India. With top-tier facilities and fierce competition, we are entering a new phase of growth and inclusivity in para sports.”*

TNPSA President Chandrasekar Rajan also acknowledged the Tamil Nadu Government’s pivotal support, saying, *”Their unwavering commitment has been instrumental in making this championship a resounding success. Beyond showcasing remarkable talent, this event reinforces our dedication to empowering para-athletes nationwide.”*

Among the top athletes participating are Sumit Antil (Javelin), Manoj Sabapathy (Wheelchair Racing), Manoj Singaraj (Shot Put), Mariyappan Thangapan (High Jump), Muthu Raja (Shot Put), Hokato Sema (Shot Put), Navdeep Singh (Javelin), and Yogesh Kathuniya (Discus).

This championship stands as a testament to the resilience and excellence of India’s para-athletes while reaffirming the nation’s commitment to inclusive sports development.
