
The Tamil Nadu Tennis Association (TNTA) announced on Monday, 16 June 2025, that Chennai will host the WTA 250, named Chennai Open later this year. The tournament is scheduled to begin on 27 October and will take place at the SDAT Nungambakkam Tennis Stadium in Chennai. The event will feature two main draws—a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw—with a total prize pool of US $250,000.
The Chennai Open debuted as a WTA 250 tournament in 2022. Back then, Linda Fruhvirtova won the singles title, while Gabriela Dabrowski and Luisa Stefani secured the doubles crown.

TNTA President Vijay Amritraj expressed his excitement about bringing back an international tennis tournament to Chennai.
“Finally, our efforts to get a major international sporting or tennis event to Chennai have borne fruit. Thanks to the strong support of the Government of Tamil Nadu and the SDAT,” he said.
“I am excited that the WTA250 event – the highest level of International Women’s event to be held in India is to take place at the SDAT Tennis Stadium after a gap of three years. I and confident that the warmth of Chennai hospitality and the excitement of the fans will make the city a welcoming and memorable destination for international players to visit and display their tennis talent,” he concluded.
The return of the tournament is seen as a significant milestone for women’s tennis in India. The 2022 edition marked the first WTA-level event in the country since 2008, and its return this year further solidifies Chennai’s growing stature as a hub for international tennis.
