Chennaiyin FC, two-time Indian Super League (ISL) champions, have announced a temporary suspension of their operations, citing ongoing uncertainty over the league’s future.

In an official statement, the club described the decision as “extremely difficult” and one taken only after “much thoughtful consideration and careful deliberation”.

“At Chennaiyin FC, we are more than just a football club. We are a family,” the statement read. “Like any family, we support each other in difficult times. However, we must remain true to the core values on which this club was built.”

The club acknowledged the well-known challenges of being a stakeholder in Indian football and said the lack of clarity over the ISL’s future had forced them to act.

“This is not a step we take lightly. It affects people we care about deeply,” the statement continued, assuring that the welfare of players, coaches, staff, and their families remained a priority. The management confirmed they were in constant communication with all stakeholders during this period.

While expressing hope that the pause would be short-lived, Chennaiyin FC reaffirmed their long-term commitment to the growth of Indian football.

“To our loyal supporters, your passion and belief have always inspired us. We ask for your understanding as we navigate this challenging period, and we look forward to better days ahead,” the statement concluded.

The two-time ISL champions join a growing list of clubs facing uncertainty in the wake of the league’s ongoing structural and operational challenges.

Meanwhile, AIFF officials are scheduled to meet with CEOs of eight ISL clubs on Thursday, August 7, in New Delhi. The high-level meeting aims to address concerns around the league’s structure, scheduling, and financial sustainability, amidst growing calls for clarity from stakeholders.
