Cheteshwar Pujara has retired and Indian cricket will remain forever indebted to him for taking care of the No. 3 position in Tests after Rahul Dravid. In an exclusive interview with RevSportz, he shared that the two Border-Gavaskar Trophy victories in Australia were the most memorable moments of his career.
“Firstly, I would say, the 2018 series on Australian soil. To have that first-ever Test series victory for India after more than 70 years was one of the proudest moments for me personally and even for the entire team,” said Pujara.
“Then the one in 2021, despite having so many difficulties and changes in the team, and losing so many players for various reasons. All the young players who got an opportunity played well and contributed to the team’s cause. Also, in the last Test at the Gabba, things were not in India’s favour, but as it turned out, everyone batted well and contributed to the team’s victory. I’m fortunate to be a part of that particular Test match and the entire series.”
Pujara was the highest run-getter in the 2018-19 series in Australia, scoring 521 runs in four matches at an average of 74.42, including three centuries. In 2020-21, he endured body blows, but his spirit remained indomitable, and he scored 271 runs in four matches.
The player from Saurashtra also revealed even one home series against Australia turned out to be a hard-fought victory.
“The one in 2017 in India was also one of the toughest series I’ve been part of. That was also amongst a very few series that India had to fight hard to win on home soil. Australia were always a very tough and competitive opponent, so those were my most memorable moments and satisfactory victories of my cricketing journey.”
