India’s captain, Sunil Chhetri, and Naorem Mahesh Singh propelled the Indian national football team to a 2-0 victory over Nepal in a thrilling SAFF Championship match at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru.
The first half remained goalless, with both teams creating promising opportunities but failing to beat the opposing goalkeepers. India’s Gurpreet Singh Sandhu made an impressive save in the 17th minute, denying Nepal a certain goal from a volleyed shot by Alik Bista.
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute courtesy Chhetri. Naorem Mahesh went on a run down the left flank and delivered a pinpoint cross to Chhetri, who clinically slotted the ball home. India’s lead was further extended in the 70th minute when Chhetri’s shot struck the crossbar, and Mahesh was quick to pounce on the rebound to securing the cushion India wanted in the final stages.
Nepal fought valiantly but struggled to break through India’s disciplined defence. India, on the other hand, maintained a solid backline and introduced tactical substitutions to hold on to their lead. Sahal Abdul Samad made way for Rahim Ali in the 82nd minute, giving the attack fresh legs.
As the match progressed, India looked to feed long balls for Lallianzuala Chhangte, but Nepal’s defence remained resolute, limiting the Blue Tigers to a two-goal victory. The final whistle confirmed India’s place in the SAFF Championship semifinals.
This was a continuation of Nepal’s losing streak against India, and reminiscent of their previous encounter in the SAFF Championship 2021, where India won 3-0. India showcased resilience and determination throughout the match, especially after the hour mark, when they found a renewed spark.
