Chief Selector Shuts Down Shreyas Iyer Snub Debate with Sharp Response: ‘Who Can He Replace’

Shreyas Iyer’s omission from the Asia Cup squad has placed the selectors in the hot seat. In defence, chief selector Ajit Agarkar stated that there was no place for Iyer in the current team composition and said he would have to wait for his opportunity.

Agarkar, along with captain Suryakumar Yadav, unveiled a 15-member squad at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai. Agarkar announced the squad, and among the notable absentees was Iyer. The Mumbai-based batter had an outstanding IPL 2025 season for Punjab Kings, scoring over 600 runs at a strike rate of more than 170. Despite these performances, he was not included in the squad — or even named among the reserves.

No fault of his, nor is it ours: Agarkar

“With regards to Shreyas, I mean, you need to tell him who he can replace. No fault of his, nor is it ours. It’s just that we have to pick 15 at the moment. He’ll have to wait for his chance,” Agarkar said at the press conference.

Apart from Shubman Gill and Jitesh Sharma, all the batters in the squad featured in India’s last T20I series at home against England earlier this year. The squad selected for the continental tournament highlights the selectors’ emphasis on continuity. Despite underwhelming IPL 2025 campaigns, both Shivam Dube and Rinku Singh have been included as middle-order options. Tilak Varma, with his consistent performances, has seemingly made the No. 3 position his own. Hardik Pandya and Axar Patel offer further options in the middle order.

India’s Asia Cup 2025 Squad:

Suryakumar Yadav (C), Shubman Gill (VC), Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Jitesh Sharma (WK), Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav, Sanju Samson (WK), Harshit Rana, Rinku Singh

Reserves: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal
