“She did it. All the hard work she has put in all these years has paid off. Can’t wait to meet her, but still, the ultimate goal, as I said earlier, is different and it is just the start.”

These were the emotional words from Gongadi Trisha’s mentor, P Srinivas, in an exclusive chat with RevSportz after India successfully defended the Women’s U19 T20 World Cup.

After restricting South Africa to 82 in 20 overs, India chased down the target in just 11.2 overs with nine wickets to spare. Trisha won the Player of the Match for her all-round performance. With the ball, she took three for 15, and then with the bat, she remained not out on 44 runs off 33 balls.

When asked about her bowling, Srinivas said, “I have always believed in her that she can deliver with the ball and what a stage to come up with those crucial three wickets.”

The young opening batter, who is the highest run-scorer of the competition in Kuala Lumpur, also won the Player of the Tournament award for scoring 309 runs and taking seven wickets.

During the post-match presentation, Trisha seemed opened up about her ultimate goal that her coach mentioned, saying: “Would like to dedicate this to my dad who is here. Always consider myself as an all-rounder. The goal is to play for the country and win more matches.”

India’s spinners were on a roll in this match, picking up nine of South Africa’s 10 wickets. Along with Trisha’s three, Parunika Sisodia, Vaishnavi Sharma and Aayushi Shukla grabbed two wickets each. The Proteas lost their last five wickets for just eight runs.

In reply, G Kamalini fell for just eight, but Trisha and Sanika Chalke remained calm and won the game for India. Vaishnavi Sharma finished as the tournament’s highest wicket-taker with 17 scalps in six innings, at an average of 4.35.

Brief scores: South Africa W 82/10 in 20 overs (Mieke van Voorst 23, G Trisha 3/15) lost to India W 84/1 in 11.2 overs (G Trisha 44*) by nine wickets.
