India’s dashing opener Abhishek Sharma dismissed any comparison between himself and legendary former India opener Virender Sehwag. Speaking on Sony Sports, Abhishek said that the bowlers of Sehwag’s era were on a different level.
Sehwag, however, had some advice for the young left-hander. He said that Abhishek should focus on converting his 70s into hundreds.
“Whenever you reach 70, don’t miss out on 100 because Sunil Gavaskar said to me – when you retire, you’ll remember the innings where you got out on 70 or 80.”
Sehwag also passed on advice that he once received from Gavaskar, who told him to bat till the end when in good form.
“If you convert those, maybe your career will have more hundreds because these opportunities don’t come again and again. When you’re batting well, on your day, try to go not out – it’s better,” he further added.
Abhishek played a flamboyant knock against Pakistan that was instrumental in India’s win. Chasing 172 runs, Abhishek and Shubman Gill’s opening partnership of 105 runs off just 59 balls laid the foundation for a comfortable victory. Their aggressive approach dismantled Pakistan’s bowling attack.
Abhishek scored 74 runs in just 39 balls, including six fours and five sixes, at a strike rate of 189.74. India eventually won the match by six wickets with seven balls to spare. Abhishek also bagged the Player of the Match award.
