The United States cricket team caused a major upset by defeating Bangladesh in a match that came down to the last over. After restricting Bangladesh to a modest total of 153, the USA’s batters, led by Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh, helped their side script one of the most memorable victories in the recent history of the game. This marks only the second occasion that the USA have defeated a Full Member nation, the first being their victory against Ireland in 2021. However, this win over Bangladesh will bolster their confidence ahead of the upcoming T20 World Cup.
After being asked to bat first, Bangladesh started off reasonably well. However, Litton Das once again struggled, getting out for 14 off 15 balls. His opening partner, Soumya Sarkar, followed shortly after, having scored 20 off 13. The USA bowled brilliantly in the first half of the innings. A crucial 67-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh gain some momentum. Hridoy managed to score a fighting half-century, but the USA restricted Bangladesh to 153-6 at the Prairie View Cricket Complex in Houston.
In response, the home team successfully chased the target with three balls remaining, thanks to unbeaten contributions from Anderson (34) and Harmeet Singh (33). Their unbroken sixth-wicket stand added 62 runs, guiding the hosts to a memorable victory.
Bangladesh, who wanted to fine-tune their preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup, received a stark reality check against the unfancied USA in the first of three T20Is in Texas.
Meanwhile, with this five-wicket win, the USA has sent a strong message to the Group A teams, which include India, Pakistan, Ireland, and Canada. The second match of the series is set to take place at the same venue on May 23. The USA will look to secure the series, while for Bangladesh, the upcoming game becomes a must-win.
