Australia captain Pat Cummins has admitted he may have to take risks with his fitness to make sure he leads the team in the Ashes opener against England in Perth on November 21. The fast bowler is currently out of action due to his lumbar bone stress and he will miss the upcoming white-ball series against New Zealand and India.
“That would be devastating, so we’ll be doing everything we can to try to be right for that and try to make a few decisions a little bit closer, but confident” Cummins said. “Do the rehab right and give it a good crack.”
Cummins also mentioned that he is confident and can be ready for the Ashes even without playing any warm-up matches. He also explained that with his experience, he can prepare faster than he could in his younger years. “At this stage of my career I feel like I can probably get up to speed a bit quicker than when I was 18 or 19,” he said.
Australia’s captain, he had a sore body after the 3-0 win against West Indies in. After a scan, it showed an injury which was serious enough to keep him out for a while, but he’s still training in the gym.
If Cummins does not recover, then Australia will have backup options in Scott Boland, with Sean Abbott, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and Jhye Richardson.
