Former South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk has reversed her international retirement by making herself available for selection ahead of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025.

In 2023, Van Niekerk announced her retirement after failing a fitness test, which led to her exclusion from the World Cup squad. On Monday, she was named in the South African women’s training camp, which will be held in Durban.

“I’m thrilled to announce that I have decided to revoke my retirement from international cricket. The time away has reminded me just how much I have missed representing my country, and I am fully committed to giving everything to once again have that opportunity,” she said on Instagram.

“I sincerely apologise to Cricket South Africa and the cricketing community for how I handled my retirement, and I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to hopefully one day showcase my skills again on the international stage. I know the standards of the team and the women’s game continue to rise, and I am ready to work hard to meet them. I return with renewed energy, focus, and a deep sense of gratitude for this chance. Thank you to everyone who continues to support me on this journey.”

The 20 players will train in Durban in preparation for the three-match ODI series against Pakistan and the World Cup to follow. After the camp, the Proteas Women will travel to Lahore for the bilateral series, scheduled to take place from 16 to 22 September.
