Dean Elgar, former South African skipper, has announced that he will retire from international cricket after the two-match Test series against India, starting in Centurion on December 26.
“As they say, ‘all good things come to an end’, and the Indian home series will be my last, as I have made the decision to retire from our beautiful game. A game that has given me so much. The Cape Town Test will be my last. My favourite stadium in the world. A place I scored my first Test run against New Zealand and hopefully my last too,” Elgar was quoted as saying in a CSA release.
“Playing the game of cricket has always been a dream of mine but having the opportunity to represent your country is the ultimate. Having had the privilege to do it for 12 years internationally is simply beyond my wildest dreams. It has been an incredible journey that I have been fortunate enough to have.”

One of the highlights of Elgar’s Test career was the hundred in the second innings against Australia at the WACA in 2016-17. Elgar also led from the front with the bat in hand in the 2021-22 Test series against India, where he compiled 235 runs at an average of 47, as South Africa posted a come-from-behind series win.
Under his leadership, South Africa won nine Tests and lost seven. He stepped down from that role after South Africa slipped to a 0-2 series loss in Australia in 2022-23.
