Former India wicketkeeper-batter Deep Dasgupta believes Dhruv Jurel has the best technique to bat at No. 3 for India in Test cricket.

Speaking to Times of India, Dasgupta said: “At this moment, Jurel looks to have the best technique to bat at No. 3. But the team management has to be clear with its vision because No. 3 will be a big call. If Jurel is only seen as a wicketkeeping backup for Pant, then it will be a problem in the long run. It’s tough for a wicketkeeper to consistently keep wickets and bat at No. 3 in Tests. Or else, he can come in for Reddy at No. 7, even though it’s very low for a proper batter to come in.”

Till the Anderson–Tendulkar Trophy in England, Jurel was seen as India’s second-choice wicketkeeper behind Rishabh Pant in Test matches. However, his recent form has made him a strong contender for a batting spot higher up the order.

In the recently concluded second unofficial Test against South Africa A, Jurel scored unbeaten 132 and 127 in both innings, showing remarkable consistency and temperament. His twin centuries have strengthened his case for a promotion in the national setup.

Earlier, in the two-match Test series against West Indies, the right-hander was India’s fourth-highest run-scorer, amassing 175 runs at an average of 87.50, including a century in Ahmedabad.
