Dinesh Karthik, former India wicketkeeper-batter, has thanked Rohit Sharma for his contributions as captain of the Indian team. Karthik praised Rohit’s approachable attitude in a video posted on his Instagram.

The 40-year-old shared the video after Shubman Gill was appointed the new ODI captain, marking the end of Rohit’s tenure.

“Rohit Sharma — thank you so much,” Karthik said in the video. “You were a phenomenal captain: tactically astute, but most importantly, very, very friendly. You got along with everyone and made them feel so comfortable. But for me, the legacy you’ve left as a captain lies in those big moments, those big matches — you taught this current team what it takes to win.”

Karthik also praised Rohit’s fearless approach as a leader.

“At times, we used to take a backward step, but you said, ‘I think we need to press forward, put more pressure on the opponent, take more risks.’ And you didn’t leave it to anyone else — you started it with the bat. In the big matches, you said, ‘I’m going to go harder,’ and that required skill. You got it done, and you did it consistently,” he said.

Under Rohit’s captaincy, India competed in three major tournaments: the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, ICC T20 World Cup 2024, and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India won both the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy, remaining unbeaten throughout both tournaments. They also had a dream run in the 2023 ODI World Cup, losing only in the final to Australia.

“In the last three multi-nation tournaments we’ve played, India has lost just one game,” said Karthik.

During his captaincy, Rohit adopted a different approach to his batting, choosing to attack the bowlers early in the innings. He has a win percentage of 75% from the 56 ODIs he led for India.

“With the bat, during your tenure as ODI captain, you averaged 52 and won 42 of the 56 matches you led. What an amazing record. All good things, as they say, must come to an end. But I really hope and believe you’re very proud — because all of India, when it watched you lead that team, was,” Karthik added.
