Mohun Bagan Super Giants joined Mumbai City by becoming only the second club in Indian Super League history to make a grand double – winning both the ISL League Shield and Cup, on Saturday, at the Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan. Subhasish Bose and his boys came back from a goal behind to win the final in front of a packed home fans. Jose Molina’s side also became the first club to win the ISL final on home turf, a feat that no other club has achieved before.

There were wild celebrations in the stands as the referee blew the final whistle. The Bagan players and support staff also soaked in the atmosphere, with Deepak Tangri and Sahal Abdul Samad leading the way. Sahal, who came in as a substitute along with Ashique Kruniyan, made a telling impact as the duo from Kerala injected fresh energy into the attack after trailing by an own goal from Alberto Rodriguez. Both the Keralites were seen posing for a photograph with the ISL trophy along with their families.

It was the Australian World Cup duo of Jason Cummings and Jamie McLaren who starred in the final, scoring the two goals for the ISL League shield winners. ‘Macca’ netted 12 goals in his debut ISL season, which also made him the top-scorer for his side. Cummings, on the other hand, also played a crucial role, scoring the equaliser from the spot kick. Both Macca and Cummings were with their better halves as they celebrated the grand double for the Mariners.

Captain Subhasish Bose was a bit emotional as he put his hand on the ISL Cup. Subhaish was playing his third consecutive ISL final, having won the Cup, beating the same opponent in Goa two seasons back. The left back had his mom, dad, and wife Kasturi to watch the final. The Bagan captain will feel disappointed that he missed out on winning the golden ball to Alaeddine Ajaraie.

The best moment of the night arrived when the young sensation Dippendu Biswas put the winner’s medal around his mother’s neck. It was a gesture of appreciation for all the sacrifices his family has made.

Mohun Bagan Super Giants owner Sanjiv Goenka was with his entire family to witness his team create history. Goenka congratulated each player and coaching staff for the way they performed throughout the season. He was seen having a long chat with Mohun Bagan club’s secretary Debasish Dutta. It is not known yet whether Goenka will take the ISL League Shield and Cup to the Mohun Bagan tent.

Mariners’ success this season revolved around a strong defence, having conceded just 19 goals. And the main architects in the defence line were the overseas duo of Tom Aldred and Alberto Rozdriguez. It was quite a cute moment when Aldred put his little son Oscar inside the ISL Cup and lifted it up for a pose along with his wife.

Finally, coach Jose Molina will have to be credited for the way he marshalled his troops and kept the dressing room atmosphere vibrant. The Spanish gaffer has now won two ISL titles – one each with ATK Mohun Bagan and MBSG. Molina had his wife beside him during the post-match celebrations. It was only fitting when he called up his entire team of support staff for a group picture.
