Following the recently concluded 2025 Malaysia Open, Indian badminton players had another opportunity to shine at the Singapore Open. However, Day 3 ended on a disappointing note for India, with only the men’s doubles team of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty managing to secure a win.

Rankireddy-Shetty Duo Keep Hopes Alive

India’s top men’s doubles pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, delivered a stellar performance to defeat the world No. 7 Indonesian duo of Sabar Karyaman Gutama and Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani. In a thrilling three-game encounter, the Indians bounced back after losing the first game to win 19-21, 21-16, and 21-19.

This victory comes as a much-needed boost for the pair, who have been struggling with fitness issues in recent weeks. They now advance to the quarter-finals, where they will face the formidable Malaysian duo of Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin, currently ranked world No. 2. The Rankireddy-Shetty duo remains India’s sole representation going into Day 4 of the tournament.

Early Exits in Singles Events

In the women’s singles category, former world champion PV Sindhu bowed out after a hard-fought match against China’s world No. 5 Chen Yufei. Despite a strong showing in the second game, Sindhu went down 9-21, 21-18, 16-21. This marks her seventh loss in 13 encounters against Chen. Sindhu had shown promise earlier in the tournament, defeating Canada’s Wen Yu Zhang in the opening round, but failed to carry that momentum into the second round.

Meanwhile, in men’s singles, H.S. Prannoy also suffered an early exit. He lost in straight games to France’s Christo Popov, with a final scoreline of 16-21, 14-21, ending his Singapore Open campaign prematurely.

Doubles Disappointments

India’s women’s doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, ranked No. 8, crashed out in the second round. They were overpowered by China’s Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in a one-sided contest that ended 8-21, 10-21.

The second Indian women’s pair, Amrutha Pramuthesh and Sonali Singh, put up a brief fight in their first game but eventually lost to Australia’s Gronya Somerville and Angela Yu, with the score reading 23-21, 21-7.

Mixed Doubles Woes Continue

In mixed doubles, the Indian pair of Rohan Kapoor and Ruthvika Shivani Gadde failed to progress past the early rounds, falling to Hong Kong’s experienced duo of Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet. The match ended with a comfortable 21-10, 21-16 win for the Hong Kong pair.
