After India’s disappointing defeat in the second ODI against the West Indies in Barbados, Rahul Dravid, the coach, provided insight into the team’s ongoing experiments. The loss marked India’s first defeat in the format against the West Indies in four years and was the result of a disastrous batting collapse, with the team going from 90-0 to 181 all out.
In this crucial match, regular stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were rested, and Hardik Pandya took charge of the team. The decision was made to give game time to other players who were in contention for a spot in the squad for the upcoming World Cup. The batting order was shuffled as well, with Rohit batting at No.7 and Kohli not getting a chance to bat despite five wickets falling in the first ODI.
Rahul Dravid clarified the reason behind these major experiments just two months before the start of the ODI World Cup. He mentioned that several key middle-order batters, including Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, were recovering from injuries at the National Cricket Academy. As time was running out for them to recover fully, it was crucial for the team to be prepared for a scenario where they might not make it to the World Cup. Therefore, this series against the West Indies provided India with the best and potentially the last opportunity to try out new players and provide them with valuable game time, in case they needed to be included in the World Cup squad.
Dravid stressed the importance of giving other players chances, even if some of the injured players recover in time for the Asia Cup and the World Cup. He acknowledged that Suryakumar Yadav, who has been invested in as an ODI player, had not yet reached his full potential and would be disappointed with his current ODI numbers. Nevertheless, Dravid believed in Suryakumar’s abilities as a talented player.
The coach also spoke about the opening pair of Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan, who played in both ODIs of the ongoing series. Gill, though yet to score a fifty on the tour, received praise from Dravid for batting beautifully. On the other hand, Ishan Kishan impressed with three consecutive fifties in his last three innings, showing his ability to seize opportunities with confidence.
The third and final ODI of the series is scheduled to be played on August 1 in Trinidad, and the fans are eagerly awaiting the outcome of this important match.
As India continues its preparations for the upcoming tournaments, the fans will be hoping for a strong performance and success in the World Cup. The selectors and coaching staff face the challenge of striking the right balance between tried-and-tested players and giving opportunities to promising talent, all while keeping the team’s best interests in mind. The road to the World Cup is undoubtedly a challenging one, but India’s cricketing legacy and the passion of its fans will undoubtedly fuel their determination to succeed on the global stage once again.
