Duleep Trophy – Kiran Powar named West Zone head coach

Ex-Mumbai batter Kiran Powar has taken charge as head coach of West Zone for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which is set to begin on August 28, in Bengaluru.

West Zone convenor Abhay Hadap said in a release: “The team will be led by a highly experienced and skilled group of professionals dedicated to ensuring the players are in peak condition for the prestigious domestic competition.

“This diverse team of specialists brings a wealth of knowledge in sports science, physical conditioning, and strategic analysis. Their collective expertise is expected to provide comprehensive support to the West Zone squad throughout the tournament as they aim for victory,” he added.

Kiran is the brother of Ramesh Powar, who in turn represented India in both Tests and ODIs. Meanwhile, Kiran played 39 first-class matches, scoring 2562 runs in 68 innings at an average of 42.00. His first-class career included eight hundreds and 14 fifties, with a highest score of 175. He was also handy with the ball, taking 10 wickets. In 32 List A matches, Kiran scored 867 runs at an average of 34.68, including one century and five fifties. He also took nine wickets. 

This year, the Duleep Trophy returns to the traditional zonal format and will feature six teams. West Zone will hope to put up a good show, with the likes Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Shardul Thakur set to represent the side. Shardul will also lead the side.
