Stunning strikes from Eberechi Eze and Ismaila Sarr, twice, gave Crystal Palace a deserved 3-0 win over Aston Villa and a place in the FA Cup final on May 17. They will play either Manchester City or Nottingham Forest at Wembley in the showpiece occasion.
As recently as a week ago, Villa were one of Europe’s most-feared sides. They may have exited the Champions League in the last eight, but the 3-2 home win over Paris Saint-Germain – they lost 4-5 on aggregate – meant that they had beaten the champions of France, the likely champions in Germany (Bayern Munich) and drawn with England’s champions-elect, Liverpool.
But Palace hadn’t lost to them this season, and Oliver Glasner, their Austrian coach, has clearly worked out how to exploit Villa’s vulnerabilities. Unai Emery’s Villa enjoyed a whopping 71 per cent of the possession, but Palace pressed effectively and took their chances clinically.

The breakthrough in the 31st minute came after Sarr had pinched the ball on the right wing and then shifted it inside and into the path of Eze. Eze has endured an often-difficult season, but his sublime first-time finished screamed past Emiliano Martinez and under the crossbar.
In the 51st minute, Boubacar Camara tangled with Eze in the box, and Anthony Taylor gave the penalty. But Jean-Philippe Mateta put it wide of Martinez’s left-hand post. Villa’s relief didn’t last long though. Adam Wharton took the ball off Morgan Rogers in midfield, Mateta played it on to Sarr and his superb low finish from distance was too good for Martinez.
As Villa chased the game in injury time, there was one final sucker punch. Again, they lost the ball in midfield, and Eddie Nketiah released Sarr, who streaked past the last defender before calmly lifting the ball over Martinez. Palace have never won the FA Cup, but whether it’s City or Forest in the final, they will be wary of a performance like this.
