Shubman Gill’s brilliant 269-run innings against England at Edgbaston drew praise from all corners, but former cricketer Yograj Singh had a slightly different take. While he admired the knock, he also expressed disappointment over Gill’s dismissal just 31 runs short of a triple century.
“When the batter gets out, then I am pained. Yuvraj is also feeling the same. He has realised that getting out after such a big score is a crime,” Yograj said while speaking to ANI. He emphasised the importance of staying not out, explaining how it helps erase mistakes and boosts a batter’s confidence.
Yograj spoke proudly about his son, Yuvraj Singh, and how he has been coaching young players like Shubman Gill, Abhishek Sharma, and Arshdeep Singh. “I am glad that whatever Yuvraj has achieved in his life, he is giving it back to the players by coaching them,” Yograj said. He added that Yuvraj understands the importance of guiding young players, which makes him equally affected when they don’t fully make use of their opportunities.
‘If Brian Lara can score 500 not out, then we can too.’ – Yograj Singh
Yograj said that great players are never satisfied, even after scoring big runs. “Sachin Tendulkar used to scold himself. Sunil Gavaskar would leave the nets if he got out,” he recalled. Yograj also believes that Gill has the potential to score 300 or even 400 in the future. “If Brian Lara can score 500 not out, then we can too.”
According to Yograj, Gill has improved technically, especially with his right hand. “The cover drives he played on the rise, head on top of the ball, he adjusted his right hand. It was perfect.”
