Shubman Gill scored a hundred as India ended Day One of the first Test against England at Leeds in a strong position. On his Test captaincy debut, Gill led from the front and finished the day with an unbeaten knock of 127 off 175 balls. With this, he became only the third Indian batter to score a Test century at number four at Leeds.
Here are the three Indian batters to score a Test century at Leeds at number four:
Sachin Tendulkar – 193, 2002
Tendulkar scored 193 against England at Leeds in the third Test of the 2002 series. Batting at No. 4, he built two significant partnerships—with Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly—to take India to a mammoth total of 628 in the first innings. His knock included 19 fours and three sixes. India eventually won the match by an innings and 46 runs.
Shubman Gill – 127*, 2025 (so far)
Gill’s unbeaten 127 has put India in a commanding position at the end of Day One in the ongoing Leeds Test. He stitched together two century partnerships—first with Yashasvi Jaiswal and then with Rishabh Pant—to steady India after early breakthroughs.
Dilip Vengsarkar – 102*, 1986
In the second Test of the 1986 series, Vengsarkar came in at No. 4 in the second innings and scored an unbeaten 102, which included ten boundaries. His knock helped India set a strong target for England in the fourth innings. Vengsarkar had also scored 61 runs in the first innings. India went on to win the match by 279 runs.
