Former India all-rounder and renowned commentator Ravi Shastri was left disappointed by the manner in which Harry Brook got out on Day Four of the ongoing Test. Brook’s dismissal came after a few attacking strokes, but Shastri believed the risk he took wasn’t worth it at that stage of the game.

“Brook can be destructive – the impact he wanted to make with those two reverse sweeps, he did that. But I think he is too good a player to put his wicket at risk at that stage of the game. It was a nothing shot. He was only going to get one run even if he connected. The risk element was huge,” Shastri said on Sky Sports during the lunch break.

Brook had started his innings with intent and managed to scoop two impressive shots early on. However, his counter-attacking approach was cut short when Akash Deep bowled a full-length delivery that Brook failed to connect with. The ball went on to rattle the stumps, ending his innings at 23 off 19 balls.

Broad: “He needed to settle in and play”

Brook’s dismissal also drew criticism from former England pacer Stuart Broad, who believed the batter had already manipulated the field well and just needed to consolidate.

“His mindset is ‘if I can go and get 60 or 70 off however many balls on this surface, I can create a bit of panic and put my team in a winning position. There were two brilliantly executed scoops and he then got the field change he wanted, but it was a clever field change moving fine leg finer. He had almost got India where he needed them to be. Now settle in and play. Make them bowl you a good ball. That is how I feel,” Broad said.
