KL Rahul, who has now scored two centuries in the ongoing Test series against England, revealed that working with Formula 1 coaches has significantly improved his reaction time and focus at the crease. Known for his calm and composed style, Rahul credited mental drills for his renewed consistency and clarity.
“In the last year or so or in the last couple of years, I have worked on a few mental drills. I spent a bit of time with an expert who can help me with improving my reaction time. And some mental drills and games that you can play that help you get better with your reaction time and stuff like that,” he said after the third day of play.
Rahul, who has been tried in various batting positions over the years, expressed satisfaction at returning to the top of the order. He believes opening suits his natural rhythm and mindset.
Speaking about a unique phase of his training, Rahul revealed that he learned from Formula 1 professionals in Austria’s Salzburg region—experts who usually work with elite motorsport and adventure athletes.
“I have seen this in Formula One quite a lot. I picked this up from one of the guys that I worked with in Austria’s Salzburg. I had the opportunity to go there and work with some of the coaches. That work with the elite Formula One guys and other adventure sports people who require a lot of this mental side of the game, helped a lot.”
“I’ve Always Enjoyed Batting Long Periods of Time”
Beyond external training, Rahul reaffirmed his love for spending time at the crease—an asset in Test cricket that complements his mental work.
“I’ve always enjoyed batting long periods of time even when I was growing up… I could focus for long hours,” he shared.
