The third day of the India vs England Test at Lord’s ended with unexpected drama as Indian captain Shubman Gill clashed with England’s Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett. With just 10 minutes left in the day’s play and scores level after both teams’ first innings, tempers flared between the sides.
Tension peaked when Crawley pulled away from facing Jasprit Bumrah four times before the third ball was bowled. Gill believed England was deliberately wasting time and responded with strong words. The situation escalated after Crawley was struck on the glove and called for the physios, prompting further confrontation—this time between Gill and Ben Duckett.
As Crawley received treatment, Gill sarcastically clapped and gestured toward the pavilion, clearly frustrated with the delay. Moments later, Bumrah responded with a peach of a delivery that beat Crawley all ends up, ending the day on a dramatic note.
Gavaskar Suggests IPL Absence Behind Hostility
Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar weighed in on the incident, offering an interesting perspective. “… England waiting to make it the last over. The Indians thought it was may bit of gamesmanship. Maybe it was.”
Gavaskar then pointed out the possible root of the friction: the lack of England players in the Indian Premier League. “There is a reason why this happened. That’s because not a lot of England players are competing in the IPL. That’s my thinking.”
He further explained how IPL exposure has helped players from other countries build camaraderie with Indian cricketers.”What has happened with other teams is that a lot of their players are in the IPL. They have mixed with the Indian players, travelled with them. They shared changing room.”
In conclusion, Gavaskar said, “There is lot of confrontation between India and England players because they don’t play in the IPL.”
