India’s nail-biting 6-run win over England in the final Test at The Oval sealed a 2-2 draw in the five-match series, with Shubman Gill named India’s Player of the Series, selected by England head coach Brendon McCullum. Team India’s new Test skipper did not have a great outing with the bat at The Oval, scoring 21 (35) and 11 (9) in the two innings, but his overall performance across the series was exceptional.

In 10 innings, Gill smashed 754 runs at an average of 75.40, including four centuries, and ended as the highest run-scorer of the series, breaking several records along the way.

Reflecting on the thrilling series, Gill lauded both teams for their effort and praised his bowlers — Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna — for delivering a match-winning performance at The Oval.

“The way both teams played was great. Came into the final days not knowing the result, showing both teams came with their A game. When you have bowlers like Siraj and Prasidh like that, captaincy looks easy. I think the way we responded today was magnificent. We were confident, even yesterday, we knew there under pressure. We wanted to make sure it stayed throughout. Siraj is a captain’s dream. Gave it his all every ball and every spell he bowled. 2-2 is a fair reflection. It shows how passionate both teams were and how well they played,” he said.

Talking about his personal performance, Gill shared that his goal was to be the top batter of the series, and achieving that felt fulfilling.

“Very rewarding, my aim was to be the best batter this series and getting there is very satisfying. It’s always a matter of sorting things out technically and mentally, they are correlated. Learnings from the last six week: We never give up,” Gill concluded.
