England all-rounder Jacob Bethell and fast bowler Sam Cook will reportedly be released from the England squad following their non-selection for the Leeds Test. Both players are set to return to County Championship action, with Bethell representing Warwickshire and Cook playing for Essex.

Bethell, who was initially considered for the No. 3 spot in England’s playing XI, missed out as Ollie Pope was preferred over him. The 21-year-old had scored three fifties against New Zealand last year.

He also made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His recent performances against the West Indies were impressive, including a knock of 82 in the first ODI. He looked in good form during the T20I series as well, which England won 3-0.

India had a strong day one at Leeds

Cook, on the other hand, was also left out as England opted for Chris Woakes as the all-rounder, with Brydon Carse and Josh Tongue completing the pace attack. Cook had made his international debut in the Test series against Zimbabwe, finishing with figures of 1/119 in 31 overs.

Both Cook and Bethell will look to continue their strong form in domestic cricket and hope to earn further international opportunities in the near future.

Meanwhile, after winning the toss and opting to bowl first, England ended Day One of the Leeds Test on the back foot. India posted 359/3 at stumps, with centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal and captain Shubman Gill, and a solid half-century from Rishabh Pant. Both Gill and Pant remained unbeaten at the close of play.
