Shubman Gill delivered a remarkable performance in the second Test at Edgbaston, becoming only the second batter in history to score two 150-plus knocks in a single Test match after Allan Border. His scores of 269 and 161 in the second innings powered India to a massive 336-run win over England. He also became the only Asian captain to win a Test at Edgbaston and registered the second-highest match aggregate (430) in Test history.
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke praised Gill’s composed approach, especially under pressure. Speaking on the Beyond23 Cricket Podcast, he said, “I know the wickets have been good for batting, a little bit slow in regards to pace but he’s looked comfortable in every position, front foot, back foot, defense, attack, he dominates spin always. So, I have been like everyone, super impressed by the way he has walked out and batted in England conditions… That’s the best way to earn respect.”
“Tactically Brilliant” – Clarke Applauds Gill’s Captaincy
India’s bowlers backed up their skipper with an all-round effort, led by Akash Deep’s 10-wicket haul, along with key breakthroughs from Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. Clarke applauded Gill’s tactical awareness, saying,“Tactically, I think he was brilliant in the second test match… I think he read his bowlers really well.”
Clarke also discussed how bowlers might look to challenge Gill: “Just to get him pushed back off the crease… the ball you would get him out on though would be that front foot length…”
He further endorsed Kuldeep Yadav’s inclusion in the Test side, adding, “I just think Kuldeep is ready to be playing in that Test team. I think he has that X factor.”
