Former England skipper David Gower has heaped praise on Indian captain Shubman Gill’s leadership and management skills during the ongoing five-match Test series against England. In an interview with Sportstar, Gower said he was impressed with Gill’s captaincy and did not feel the absence of the two senior players who recently stepped away from the Test format.

“Building a team depends on so many things. At the start of the series, people focused on the absence of Rohit (Sharma) and Virat (Kohli). But Shubman stepped up and played beautifully in two Tests,” Gower said.

Gower believes age is no barrier to leadership, and Gill has demonstrated this in the current series against England.

“You don’t have to be 34 to lead — you can be 24, if you’ve got talent, a good head, and a solid technique. That kind of player can fill the gap,” he added.

Gower praises Ben Stokes

Gower also highlighted Ben Stokes’ remarkable bowling effort, noting the significant impact of his 44-over spell that turned the tide of the Test at Lord’s.

“Team-building often comes down to individual moments. Look at Stokes at Lord’s — this is the Stokes we’ve missed: bowling at 90 miles an hour, driving the attack forward. You want all your key players at peak performance — that’s what shifts a match,” he remarked.

The Shubman Gill-led Indian side will face Ben Stokes’ England in the fourth Test of the five-match series at Old Trafford in Manchester.
