Team India’s new Test captain, Shubman Gill, has enjoyed a fantastic series with the bat, having smashed 754 runs in 10 innings in the ongoing England vs India Test series. However, the ongoing Oval Test did not go as he would have wanted, especially considering the form he’s in.
On day three, when he came out to bat, Gill had a chance to break Sunil Gavaskar’s record for the most runs in a Test series by an Indian — 774 in eight innings against West Indies in 1970/71.
But Gill failed to do so, getting out for 11 runs and thus finishing the series with 754 runs in 10 innings at an average of 75.40, including four centuries. After day three’s play, legendary former India batter Sunil Gavaskar, currently working as a broadcaster for the series, walked up to the Indian skipper and gifted him a signed cap and a shirt with the initials “S.G.” as a mark of appreciation.
Gavaskar appeared proud while handing over the gifts as a token of admiration for Gill’s performance throughout the series. While handing over the gift to Gill, Gavaskar said, “This is a little cap, which I give to very few people with my signature.”
Gavaskar then revealed that he would be wearing his lucky jacket the next day — the same one he wore during India’s memorable victory over Australia in the 2021 Gabba Test, where Gill scored 91 runs in the fourth innings during a successful chase of 328.
Although Gill missed out on Gavaskar’s all-time record, he did break the record for the most runs by an Indian captain in a single Test series. Gavaskar had scored 732 runs in the 1978/79 home series against West Indies.
Meanwhile, India ended the third day of the Oval Test on a high. After setting England a target of 374, India struck on the final delivery of the day as Mohammed Siraj dismissed Zak Crawley. England finished day three at 50/1, still needing 324 runs with eight wickets in hand.
