Shubman Gill made a powerful impact with the bat in the second Test at Edgbaston, scoring a brilliant 269 runs. His knock not only silenced critics but also created history, as he became the Indian captain with the highest individual Test score — surpassing Virat Kohli’s unbeaten 254 against South Africa.

Before the series began, former England captain Michael Vaughan had jokingly questioned Gill’s Test average. But after watching this remarkable innings, Vaughan was quick to change his tune.

“At the start of the series, I said that his average of 35 in cricket, that’s not high enough for his quality. I think probably by the end of this series he will be averaging 45. He’s made a terrific start. He is the captain, second time out and he’s now two from two. Magnificent,” Vaughan said on air.

Vaughan Impressed by Gill’s Technique and Leadership

Gill faced 387 balls, smashed 30 boundaries and three sixes, and helped India post a massive total of 587. Vaughan was particularly impressed by the way Gill made full use of the conditions and remained technically sound throughout the innings.

“It was a great toss for him to have lost… I think great players realise it, and his feet have been going great. His technique looks absolutely pure. And he just had the mindset to perform,” Vaughan added.

Gill’s historic knock was strongly supported by the lower order. Ravindra Jadeja, who has an excellent record at Edgbaston, contributed 89 runs but fell just 11 runs short of a century. Washington Sundar also added a valuable 42, helping India recover from a shaky 211/5 to a commanding 587.
