Harry Brook once again showed his class, scoring a brilliant century against India on Day 3 of the second Test at Edgbaston. After narrowly missing out on a hundred with a score of 99 in the first innings at Headingley, Brook made sure he crossed the mark this time. His century came off just 137 balls and was adorned with elegant strokes.
He reached the milestone in the 51st over with a delightful cut shot off Prasidh Krishna, sending the ball past the gully and racing to the boundary at deep third. Upon reaching his hundred, Brook removed his helmet, raised his bat, and acknowledged the applause as he celebrated his first Test century against India.
Brook-Smith Partnership Lifts England After Early Collapse
By the end of 51 overs, England were 269 for 5, still trailing India’s formidable first-innings total of 587 by 318 runs. Brook had scored 102 runs off 137 balls, including 12 fours and a six. England’s white-ball captain, Jamie Smith, played the dominant role in the partnership, unbeaten on 111 from just 96 balls.
England had suffered an early collapse and were in trouble at one stage, but the partnership between Brook and Smith helped them stabilise. Indian bowlers, especially Mohammed Siraj (3 wickets) and Akash Deep (2 wickets), were impressive early on, but Brook’s composed and confident innings has brought England back into the contest. The hosts have successfully avoided the follow-on.
