Rishabh Pant once again showed how important he is for India in Tests with a well-composed knock on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. He walked in after India lost Yashasvi Jaiswal following his brilliant 101-run knock. Pant then joined skipper Shubman Gill at the crease, and by the end of the day’s play, he remained unbeaten on 65 as India finished Day One on 359/3 in 85 overs.
Pant struck six boundaries and two sixes, scoring at a strike rate of 63.72. He also reached the milestone of 3000 runs in Test cricket, becoming only the second Indian wicketkeeper-batter to do so in the longest format.

Rishabh Pant now has three fifties along with two centuries in Tests in England
It was an entertaining knock, full of attacking intent. Just the second delivery of his innings saw Pant charging down the track to England captain Ben Stokes and smashing him straight over his head for a boundary. That fearless approach left Stokes surprised, as he was seen laughing and saying something to Pant afterwards.
Later, when Stokes bowled a slower, loopy full toss, Pant calmly dropped his bat down at the right moment and collected a single to mid-off. Throughout the day, fans witnessed an intense but enjoyable battle between Pant and Stokes, with both players clearly relishing the contest.
Eventually, both Gill and Pant remained not out at stumps, and Indian fans will be hoping the duo—India’s newly appointed Test captain and his deputy—continue from where they left off on Day Two.
