Ahead of the first Test between England and India at Leeds, former Team India great Sachin Tendulkar shared some useful advice for India’s batters on how to succeed in English conditions. While exclusively speaking to Boria Majumdar of RevSportz, he urged the Indian players to maintain a positive mindset and adapt to the situation and prevailing conditions.
Tendulkar emphasised that being defensive, when required by the situation, can also be seen as a form of positive cricket. He encouraged the players to identify scoring opportunities and tailor their approach based on the match scenario and the pitch conditions.
“My advice is stay positive and deal with the challenge.” – Sachin Tendulkar
“There will always be challenges in Test cricket, and good teams and good players need to deal with these challenges and overcome them. So my advice is stay positive and deal with the challenge. And when I say stay positive, being defensive at times is also staying positive. Identify the areas where you can score runs. And play to the situation and the conditions. That’s how you succeed in England,” Tendulkar told RevSportz.
India have many young players on this tour, and this will be the first time they play without their two most senior batters—Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli—both of whom have announced their retirement from the longest format.
Whether Tendulkar’s advice proves effective remains to be seen, as the new skipper Shubman Gill and his deputy Rishabh Pant lead a fresh-looking Indian side into the series, starting on 20 June.
